The installation of Protected Bike Lanes on the congested commercial stretch of Columbia Road in Adams Morgan is a prime example of the disintegration of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) where separate staff operations for bus, bike and freight traffic do not talk to one another.
In the works for many years and only recently installed, the bike plan purports to promote safety by removing traffic lanes, forcing cars into oncoming traffic when 18-wheeler delivery trucks park in the traffic lane. The plan dangerously stops fire fighters, police and ambulances during rush hour. Ambulances can no longer park in front of the healthcare facility. Clearly, DDOT’s bike team did not consider the need for deliveries on a commercial street. Dismissing objections from residents, DDOT persisted in a plan that does not accommodate obvious community needs on the assumption that ‘they will get used to it.
Tonight, the Kalorama Citizens Association will host At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds and DDOT’s Bike Plan is on the agenda.
