Community Calls Meeting Tonight
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will present the Taylor St. NE Bike Plan at a public meeting tonight called by Save Taylor St. NE, an organization of neighbors protesting the plan.
“The meeting will be an opportunity to address community concerns,” said Minister Robert Walker of the Michigan Park Christian Church, which is hosting the meeting. The congregation will be joined by Min. Christian S. Watkins of the Asbury United Methodist Church downtown. Invited: Ward 5 Councilmember Zachary Parker

Principal concerns include the failure of DDOT to engage the community on a major disruptive change in traffic patterns. The plan claims the curb exclusively for bikes with Protective Bike Lanes (PBLs), displacing parking and resident access to the curb. Studies show that so-called “Protective” Bike Lanes are dangerous on roads with many driveways and alleys that interrupt the bike lane, causing hazards for seniors, the handicapped, deliveries, Metro Access, as well as bikers themselves. Further, PBLs do not address the fact that most accidents occur at intersections where PBLs cannot be installed. The community challenges DDOT safety claims in reducing traffic lanes to one lane creating bottlenecks and congestion that impede first responders and deliveries.
