Mendelson tells Woodridge, residents, he hears from bike advocates
Warren Corlick, chair of the Bicycle Advisory Council (BAC) reported on the BAC listserv yesterday, November 12, that the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will pause bike lane plans for two years.
“My understanding from DDOT officials is that they have 20 miles of protected bike lanes in the pipeline. DDOT will come out with a new five-year work plan for the years 2027-2031 and their focus for the next two years will be to develop this new work plan. During this period, no further bike lanes will be proposed by DDOT, though work on the 20 miles remaining will continue. We will discuss this and other issues at our next BAC meeting this Wednesday evening.”

Gorlick serves as chair of the BAC, a citizens’ advisory council composed of volunteers appointed by the Councilmembers. The BAC meets virtually every other month in public meetings to promote biking in DC.
In related news, DC Council Chair Phil Mendelson visited the Woodridge Civic Association last night, Nov. 12, where residents have been protesting DDOT plans on South Dakota Ave and Taylor St. NE. Mendelson said he hears from advocates of bike lanes every day, not so much from opponents. He said, the whole purpose of the bike lane program sometimes seems to be “to make life unpleasant for car drivers so we’ll all get on our bike. But for some of us that is not possible.” Mendelson noted that the concrete islands DDOT is putting in the middle of the streets show tire marks. “It will take time for motorists to learn how they work. Every week there’s something new to learn,” he said.
