DDOT presents plan at meeting, tonight Nov. 6, 2024
Neighborhood concerns over the South Dakota Ave Safety Study will be heard tonight at a presentation by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). At the request of the North Michigan Park Civic Association, DDOT will present its new safety study “so neighbors can follow along with the study and plan their engagement participation. After which we would assume a listening posture,” according to DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum.
When: Wednesday, November 6, 7-9 pm
Where: Faith United Church
4900 10th Street NE (off South Dakota Ave.)
Washington DC 20017
Neighborhood concerns include:
Removal of traffic lanes creates congestion, blocking passage of first responders and raising the question: Where will the traffic go? Side streets?
Bike lanes on congested commercial streets will create hazards.
Community urges alternate routes for biking, like nearby Metro Branch Trail. The community requested data and models for all similar major arterial roadways. We challenge DDOT safety claims of the Road Diet.
Toxic fumes on congested streets will impact respiratory issues, especially for African-Americans, who have one of the highest respiratory illness rates in the US and 70% of residents along the SDA corridor are African American!
Why waste $ millions for bike lanes that mostly remain empty?
DDOT’s community engagement is insufficient. Community urges distribution of fliers and other means to reach residents who are not “tech savvy”.
Do DDOT plans conflict with DC’s Human Rights Act of 1977 and the DC Office on Equity guidelines?
